The Entrance hall and Front door

9 pm

The Front door is the original oak door, which has been tarred making it look almost burnt. The most noticeable thing on this door is the lack of height; it is thought the drawbridge that was originally on the house was a lot lower than the stone bridge, which now goes over what is left of the moat. The knocker is the shape of a “Y” to represent the father, son and Holy Ghost.

The legend also goes that Oliver Cromwell left an axe mark in the door when he visited during the battle of Preston, in order to spy from the hall.

In the right hand wall of the entrance hall is a small window this has been authenticated as still containing the original glass. It was thought that by lighting a candle, the light would travel across the fields and show the villagers that a secret mass was being held in the chapel.

(Notice the large number of orbs around the door!)
