The chapel is one of the oldest chapels in the country and dates
from the 13th century. It is small but is fully equipped for worship
by any of the monks or locals who wished to use it. During the reformation,
when Catholicism was not tolerated, the chapel could be taken down and a fire
lit to hide the evidence.
As you can see from this picture, there is a stone slab moved
from the floor. All the bibles and other religious paraphernalia would have
been hidden here and the slab moved back. A fire was then lit to hide the slab.
The pulpit and painting were not present in those times so they would not have
been hidden, but the cross on the wall may have been covered with something.
One of the other features of the chapel was a priest hole in the
chimney. This can be seen from Eleanor’s room. Monks could hide here if the house was
investigated, but with a fire below this would have been most uncomfortable.
